The Two-Year Plan

If your goal is to graduate in two years and you transferred at least 60 college-level units, plan to reach the minimum 120 units to graduate by completing 30 units per year (varies depending on the number of units transferred to SF State).

Example 1

15 units (Fall) + 15 units (Spring) = 30 units

Example 2

12 units (Fall) + 12 units (Spring) + 6 units (Summer) = 30 units

Understanding Transfer Credit

New Transfer -- Make the Most of Your Transfer Credit

Check your Transfer Credit Report to confirm that we received your official transcripts and/or test credit (i.e. Advanced Placement exam scores). This report shows the total number of units transferred from each source and a list of all transfer work that includes information about the type of credit earned at SF State.

You can apply up to 70 units from community college toward the minimum 120 units to graduate. There is no limit to the number of units you can apply toward your degree from Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate credit and four-year universities.

Requests to use transfer credit for major requirements

To request that transfer credit be used to satisfy major requirements, contact your major department directly and be prepared to provide a copy of your Transfer Credit Report, Unofficial Transcript (from your transfer institution), and detailed course information (e.g. course description/ syllabus).

Requests to use transfer credit for General Education

Once credit is reflected on your Transfer Credit Report, an advisor at the Undergraduate Advising Center may be able to assist you or refer you to the appropriate office(s). Be prepared to provide detailed course information (e.g. course description/syllabus) if requesting a course be evaluated for GE credit or lower/upper-division.

An Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT)

The ADT is a specialized associate degree earned at a community college that certifies completion of lower-division GE requirements and preparatory courses towards an approved similar major at the CSU. Earning an ADT and pursuing an approved similar major guarantees that you will enter the CSU system as a junior and will only require 60 units to complete your degree. Additionally, the SF State Studies requirement is waived if you are pursuing an approved similar major at SF State. For a list of approved similar majors, refer to ueap.sfsu.edu/articulation and via the button below.

California Promise Program

The San Francisco State California Promise Program is open to incoming residents or AB 540 transfer students who have earned an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) and are pursuing an approved similar major at SF State. The program provides priority registration and resources to help you graduate in two years. For more information about deadlines, applying to the program, and program requirements, go to ueap.sfsu.edu/California-promise-program

SF State Studies & Upper Division General Education

Plan to satisfy the SF State Studies requirement with GE, major or minor courses. Refer to the example to see how some transfer students satisfy SF State Studies with Upper Division GE courses.
